Possibly. Some of you may remember the plethora of problems I've had with getting the Firebird up and running again. Honestly it hasn't been too bad all things considered, but there have been some special issues with the brakes for sure. At first they smoked and then they didn't. But then they smoked again, and then they didn't. So I took it to the shop and they bled the lines and found tons of gunk in there that was probably causing the problem. I took the car home again, drove it, and they smoked. So I took it back to the shop. It's been almost two weeks but they just dropped the car off today. I haven't been able to drive it yet but it has been proclaimed to be "fixed." I sure hope so.
Apparently what they found was that the master cylinder was maintaining residual pressure on the front disc brakes causing the brake pads to touch ever so slightly. After driving for a significant distance this friction will cause heat, excessive wear, and smoke, eventually causing the brakes to lock up all together no doubt. Imagine driving down the freeway with one foot on the gas and the other on the brakes. Not a good idea. Anyways, they swapped master cylinders but found the same pressure issue happening. But they noticed that there was no pressure on the back drum brakes. Now I learned that this pressure is supposed to be sent to the drum brakes and not the disc brakes. I'm not sure why drum brakes require this pressure but there you go. So they basically made up some custom lines and swapped them so the pressure ran the the back drum brakes freeing up the front disc brakes. They drove it a ton and it seems to be working A-OK. It all sounds good to me, but as I mentioned I have yet to drive the car to test it myself. I do hope the problem is now fixed so I won't have to worry about giving a special effects show while driving down the road. Though it was kind of cool having the "smoke screen" weapon from Spy Hunter. And considering my car leaks fluids I guess it's still equipped with "oil slick." Now all I need is to mount a mini-gun to the hood and I'd be all set.
