This was a good Halloween. I don't think we've ever had a bad Halloween in the past, but I do know that this was a good one. The house was decorated inside and out, cauldron's filled with candy flowed freely, and Belle had a blast handing it out.
Just as it was getting dark, and trick or treating time was drawing near, Belle awoke from her nap. I told her that it was Halloween night and all the kids are going to be out trick or treating. She informed me that no other kids are going trick or treating, only her. As the night went on I was worried that she might be right since it took awhile for the other kids to start showing up. Anyways, shortly after she woke up Katie arrived home from work. We then slapped a Goofy costume on Isabelle and off we went.
As you can see we left our door monkey in charge while we were away. He held our FSCB laden cauldron with pride, ready to fend off any tricksters who tried to steal the whole lot. But that was never necessary. We were always within eyesight of our house and only two or three kids stopped by while we were away. I believe we only hit about six houses or so. Just the immediate ones nearby and a few further off that were well decorated. Belle knew what to do and did an awesome job knocking on the doors and saying "Trick or Treat!" Things became a little unclear once a piece of candy was plopped down in her bag though. At first she'd just stand there waiting... like, what's next? Then we'd have her say "thank you" and urge her on to the next house. She looked great in her little Goofy costume but the headpiece only lasted one or two houses. It tends to bobble around a bit which annoyed Belle so off it went. She still looked cute in the rest of it though.
Back at the house we sorted her candy while we waited for more kids to arrive. We were surprised at the paltry numbers we had seen so far, especially with it being a Friday night and all. But they started coming as it got later and Belle discovered her favorite part of the night - handing out candy. We all sat and watched "It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown" as we waited for trick or treaters. Belle sat at the edge of her Dora chair, candy bars in hand, eager to shove sugary treats at strangers. When she'd see them coming up the walkway she'd yell: "More kids are coming!" and run to the screen door with her fists full of candy.
The FCSB's were appreciated and we got more than one comment from kids and even some from parents. One kid in a clown suit gave me a "Hey, nice house man." Then when Belle gave him two FSCB's he said: "Whoa, full size!? Thanks!" Another time we handed this nice kid two bars and he walked back to his parents waiting on the sidewalk. Then we hear his Mom say: "Hey, full size candy bars! I'm calling Ken, we gotta get more people!" She then proceeded to call Ken on her cell phone. I'm not sure if he ever arrived but I do know we burned through our entire FSCB supply. Most kids got two each, but towards the end there we had to switch back to one so we wouldn't completely run out. Of course we always had a "fun size" backup supply. But who wants those?
We only let Isabelle eat one piece of candy that night. Sadly, she chose the Tootsie Pop and took her sweet time getting to the center. In fact, she never did make it and we wrapped it up for later. The part that she did finish took its toll because she didn't fall asleep until 1 AM. I'm not sure if it was the excitement of the night or the sugar rush but she laid in bed for a long time completely amped. Katie and I were in bed for a good 30 minutes before I looked at the clock and saw that it was 12:45 in the morning. Belle was happily talking to herself, rolling around, and singing every song she knew. I then went in and told Belle she needed to go to sleep. I tucked her in, walked out, and she crashed shortly afterward. It had been a long fun day and we all needed some sleep. The next day was our Halloween party, but more on that later.
